Proofreading

If you’ve ever noticed a silly error in a book, a menu, on a website or book, or anywhere else, you probably don’t wonder why proofreading matters. Worse, if you’ve been called on an error you missed, you’ll know exactly why it matters. Whether it’s to watch for language issues for non-native speakers, to ensure consistency, or simply because it’s hard to see your own mistakes, there’s no shame in hiring a proofreader. Everyone needs one (even proofreaders …)!

What does a proofreader do for you? Here’s a few examples:

  • watch for spelling and grammatical errors
  • check for consistent verb tenses
  •  watch for “lost” pronouns (ie. “he”, when it’s unclear who “he” is)
  •  check correct word use (ie. they’re, their, there)
  •  note missing or repeated words that were correct in your brain but not your text
